National Hope Awards
Last May I traveled to Washington DC to receive a national award from Honeywell and the National Center for Missing Children.
I entered the GOT2BSAFE contest last year not having any idea that my lesson would actually be chosen.
The lesson is based on a strong belief I have in Internet Safety. I was trained at a Media Specialist and received my master’s degree in library and information science. I developed many workshops and lessons on internet safety during my education as a media specialist at Wayne State University.
When safety comes to mind I thought of my media specialist training. Many students these days are feeling far too comfortable on the internet. It is part of their adolescence and part of how our community is set up now. Children are kept inside to be safe. Then they find entertainment on the internet. Im-ing, blogging, emailing are all part of their social network. They become very comfortable (like a driver in a car- a false sense of safety). They must be taught to keep their personal information personal and be given a foundation for internet safety for a lifetime.
I flew into Washington DC and stayed at a hotel right on Capitol Hill. It was right after the Cherry Festival and it was absolutely beautiful in the city. I will never forget the azaleas in bloom in every park, red, white, pink. Incredible!
